Annual Camp in Czech Republic went well

A group of twenty five scouts and ventures participated in our ten day camping in the 2nd International Deaf Scout Camp at Czech Republic on Monday 21st July to Thursday 31st July 2008 with three leaders. The events went well and organised by Potkani 53 Czech Scout Group. Many of our members had a good time, exchanging information plus challenging experience of survival particular using the outdoor toilet without toilet flushing. See our photos in the gallery.

Thank to Lucie Pulpanova and Frantisek Pulpan, for hosting it and making it happening for Deaf Scout around the world. Sixty three participants took part into 2nd International Deaf Scout Camp from Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Finland and Czech Republic. See their updated website http://potkani.ruce.cz/index.php with plenty of photographs.

Slumber Night Report

16th June to 17th June

Twenty two scouts including leaders took part in the slumber night staying for one night on lawn at the back the Dublin Deaf Association (DDA) premises. Many of leaders had commitments on Sunday such as attending the National Council Meeting of Scouting Ireland. Everyone contributed five euro on the sponsor card.

It started on Friday 16 th June evening at 5pm. The leaders were anxiously waiting for scout to arrive but eventually they did and it builds up with an increasing numbers parents asking curiously questions. The scouts started off with a pioneering project and built an open gateway with coloured ribbons and balloons at the front of St Vincent’s Centre for the Deaf. Eventually we attracted attention of the public. We also flew two flags, the World Scout flag and our own Scout Group flag on top of the gate.Four to six scouts manned the front gate collecting money from people passing by during the rush hour between 5.30pm and 8pm while the others worked away on the pioneering project at the front and back of the club.

At the same time there were other events taking place in the Deaf Club. The Deaf woman’s group and the old folks had a meeting in the club and many of the members donated money to help us to help sick children.

Throughout the night we continued telling stories using Irish Sign Language. The Scouts sat together between two altar fires and carried on with more stories and played some quiet games in the mess tent. Most popular game was the sleeping bag game. It wasn’t until after 3am that everyone fell soundly asleep. On the following day (Saturday, 17 th) we continued to raise money by placing several scouts at the front and back of DDA premises. Fortunately, there were many events taking place in the club. The sign language association of Ireland (SLAI) had its workshop and AGM; the Irish Association of Sign Language Interpreters (IASLI) had a meeting as well as the adjourned annual meeting of DDA. Many of the scouts raised money from different organisations in the club on a rota basis while the others played games on the lawn such as pillow fight, water flight and a water slide using a large plastic sheet and washing up liquid.

At six pm it was time to stop the games and fund raising. We dismantled the pioneering work and stored the tents before attending Saturday evening Mass in the chapel located in the Deaf club. Many scouts and leaders attended in full uniform. After mass we continued to raise more money from those who attended mass.

The total money rose on Friday evening and Saturday was €763.26.

Well done to all those who took part.
